Some Typical Services Rendered to Clients: General Scientific, Including Industrial, Waste Remediation, Agricultural and Environmental

On this page, I offer an overview and brief summary of some services in the general scientific category which I have rendered to consulting and contractual clients since 1998. In all cases, any significant details which might allow an observer to identify a client or technology or technology details to an inappropriate extent have been obscured to maintain complete client confidentiality.

A note about client privacy and confidentiality: Identity of my clients and details of work rendered for my clients, unless explicit arrangements have been made otherwise, remains entirely confidential and private. This is of utmost importance in this field, as many of my clients have a number of proprietary and trade secrets for technologies and processes which they wish to keep confidential.

  • For a commercial venture in northern Europe: acted as a consultant and overseer of the design and implementation/installation by local contractors of a 120+ kW solar photovoltaic (PV) grid-tied installation selling AC power back to the local utility grid.

  • For several small companies and homeowners across the world: consultation, design and implementation of an off-grid backup AC power system using flooded lead-acid (FLA) batteries, capable of supplying 10 kilowatt-hours (kWH) per day of AC power for up to 18 days in the absence of commercial AC power from utility sources (that is, in the event of a prolonged power failure with a duration of up to 18 days), for a total energy storage capacity of about 200 kWH of battery backup power. Such an extended-term battery backup uninterruptible power system (aka UPS) is sometimes called a perpetual power unit (PPU). While a conventional uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system provides backup AC power for a period of time ranging from three minutes to two hours in the event of commercial power failure, a perpetual power unit can provide backup AC power for periods ranging from one day to over 30 days in the event of prolonged periods of commercial power outage, and will then recharge its battery bank(s) once AC power has been restored, or if connected to a portable generator.

  • For several small companies and homeowners across the world: consultation, design and implementation of off-grid solar PV systems, including large battery banks for energy storage, capable of providing up to 8 kilowatt-hours (kWH) per day of AC power for powering essential services (i.e., lighting, charging cell phones, powering PCs, routers and modems, etc.), and capable of supplying continuous AC backup power for up to 8 days during periods of prolonged low-light conditions (i.e., rainy days, cloudy skies, snow cover on solar PV panels, etc.) where little or no power is delivered by the solar PV panels. Some of these solar PV systems were successfully implemented in low-available-light forested mountainous locations where a large amount of shading and shadowing from numerous large trees was present, and where the homeowner/business owner was wisely unwilling to cut down many dozens or hundreds of large trees simply to eliminate shading/shadowing of the solar PV panels.

  • For several small companies: acted as consultant and design engineer for implementation of a complete and comprehensive system to eliminate high levels of equipment damage and losses from frequent surges and short-term failures of commercial AC power, and from surges due to nearby lightning strikes. The remedies included installation of good grounds, surge protection equipment on incoming AC power lines and on signaling/control cables, battery backup UPSs or PPUs for providing uninterrupted AC power to selected systems and equipment, and installation of lightning protection systems.
